In Ontario, under the current Occupational Health & Safety Act, businesses with 20 or more employees are required to have Certification training for at least 2 members of their Joint Health & Safety Committees (for businesses with more than 50 employees, a minimum of 4 JHSC members (half of which must be workers) must be Certified).
There are two primary components to Certification Training:
The first is Certification Part I which provides basic health & safety training around the Occupational Health & Safety Act, understanding the legislation, understanding basic workplace health & safety, the role of Joint Health & Safety Committees, accident investigations, inspections, and understanding and recognizing workplace hazards. Certification Part I training is available from the OSSA in instructor-led classroom training, in a print / video/DVD self-paced course and through an online e-learning course called SafeLearn.
All OSSA courses are fully approved by the WSIB and meet all WSIB requriements around Certification Part I.
Certification Part II was established as part of an effort to improve the quality of workplace health & safety programs throughout the province. This requires the completion of hazard-specific training around hazards identified that are specific to your particular workplace.
