CEO Health & Safety Charter

The Ontario Service Safety Alliance (OSSA) recently hosted a special breakfast in support of the CEO Health & Safety Leadership Charter. The Charter, established by Duncan Hawthorne, President and Chief Executive Officer of Bruce Power, is championing this Canada-wide initiative to achieve a breakthrough in health and safety. He has been joined by over 50 CEOs, including some of the country’s most influential leaders.

The Charter is based on the principle that effectively managing health, safety and wellness is essential for a business to succeed. By signing the Charter, CEOs commit to:

  • Integrate health and safety into business strategies, processes and performance measures, and to recognize that good health and safety performance supports good business results.
  • Strive for continuous health and safety improvement and to provide the leadership and means to make this happen.
  • Share information among CEOs to promote best practices.

"This initiative creates a vehicle to allow companies to share in many good safety practices. In this way, new levels of safety performance can be achieved and strong safety alliances forged. Engaging the senior leadership is key in ensuring that real change occurs," said Hawthorne.

The OSSA is working in conjunction with its system partners to support the Charter and help connect Ontario’s service sector executives with this growing coalition of corporate leaders. .

"As a champion of health and safety as the foundation for corporate social responsibility, the OSSA recognizes the necessity of involvement and advocacy by all levels of the workplace, but especially from senior leadership," said Elizabeth Mills, President & CEO of OSSA. "Change and involvement start with progressive steps, and the CEO Charter is a great way for senior management to start that process by networking to help make Ontario workplaces healthier and safer."

The Ontario Service Safety Alliance (OSSA) is the designated Safe Workplace Association for Ontario’s service sector representing firms across the province in the retail and wholesale, restaurant and foodservice, tourism and hospitality, vehicle sales and service and office and related services sub-sectors. The OSSA is pleased to act as facilitator of this important initiative to progress the integration of health and safety in Ontario businesses.
